What is a deadbolt?
A deadbolt is a lock whose bolt moves only when you turn the key or thumb-turn. Unlike a spring latch, it cannot be pushed back with a card or knife, which makes it much harder to force.
Single or double cylinder
A single cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a thumb-turn inside, which makes it easy to leave in an emergency. A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which can help on doors with glass panels but slows your exit in a fire. Check local fire rules before choosing double cylinder locks.
What makes a deadbolt strong
- A bolt that extends a full inch into the frame
- A reinforced strike plate
- Long screws that reach the wall stud, not just the door jamb
- A quality cylinder that resists picking and bumping
Simple upgrades
Replacing short strike screws with longer ones is one of the least costly improvements you can make. For older doors, a new deadbolt keyed to your other locks adds security without adding another key.
