"Best" is a tagline, not a credential
Search for a locksmith and you will see plenty of businesses describing themselves as the top choice in town. Those words are free to write. What matters is how a locksmith behaves on the phone and at your door, and whether they hold the credentials the job requires.
Signs of a professional
- They answer with the business name and give a clear price or range before sending anyone.
- The technician carries ID and arrives in a marked vehicle.
- They confirm your identity before opening a home or car.
- They explain the work and the cost before starting, and do not push upgrades you do not need.
- They give an itemised receipt.
Licensing and insurance in California
California licenses locksmith companies and individual locksmiths through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). You can ask for the licence number and check it on the state's online licence lookup. It is also reasonable to ask whether the business carries liability insurance.
Check reputation the right way
Look at recent reviews on more than one platform, read how the business responds to complaints, and ask friends or neighbors for referrals.
Red flags
- No business name, or only a generic name such as "locksmith services"
- A very low phone price that grows once the technician arrives
- Refusal to quote before starting
- Unmarked vehicles and no ID
- Drilling a lock straight away on a simple lockout
- Pressure to buy expensive replacements
Why local matters
A locksmith based in your area depends on local word of mouth and is more likely to be accountable. Ask where the business is dispatched from. Ours is Van Nuys 91405; see our home page for what we cover.
